Understanding Art (with Art CourseMate with eBook Printed Access Card)

UNDERSTANDING ART provides a balanced approach to appreciating art, incorporating coverage of masterworks from the past and present. Author Lois Fichner-Rathus combines a conversational writing style with rich images, all designed to inspire understanding of the art that surrounds you in everyday life.

Understanding Art (with Art CourseMate with eBook Printed Access Card) Feature:

  • Scales are placed next to images in the text to help students better visualize the size of each work. It is easy to see whether an image is a monumental sculpture or mural, or a figurine or miniature. This innovative feature helps students to better grasp the importance of scale which, like composition, color, line, and other terms used to describe an artwork, is a key factor in helping students understand the artist's purpose.
  • A state-of-the-art learning environment, delivered via CourseMate or LMS-specific course cartridges (WebTutor), for a small incremental fee, provides access to additional resources including an interactive eBook, flashcards, videos, quizzes, glossary, flashcards, related links, exercises, Internet Activities, a Museum Guide, and more.
  • When students use flashcards (images in the text) to study for exams, they can access links to related videos, websites, ArtTours in Google Maps, interactive tutorials, exercises and quizzing.
  • Videos include demonstrations of various studio art techniques, YouTube clips, topical video podcasts, and three dimensional panoramic views of architecture. Interactive exercises explore the foundations of art, and quizzes provide the tools that students need to master the material.
  • Critical thinking is the focus of the "Compare + Contrast" section. It presents two or more works of art side by side and poses questions that help students focus on the stylistic and technical similarities and differences between two or more works.

Texture A Photo Training - learn how to texture a photo with Perfect Layers 2

Training available for PhotoShop CS6, Photoshop Elements 10, and Perfect Layers 2. For other training check out textureaphoto.com.

Ready to add more depth, more story, more feeling to your photos?

Texture blending is the process of overlaying a texture file (or several) over a photo during the editing process. Some pictures take many strong textures and deep colors. Some pictures take a hint of texture that is hardly noticeable. However they are used, textures add a deeper element to photo art.

Texture A Photo is a complete texture package for digital artists and photographers. It is designed to be an asset to professional photographers as well as including training for 3 popular editing software programs making it available to beginners as well. Software training is included for Photoshop CS6, PhotoShop Elements 10, and Perfect Layers 2. Training is in PDF as well as video format.

The package includes over 450 full resolution texture files. It has all the original files for standard texturing options but also went much farther. It includes texture files with tints; first sepia and black white textures to work for monochrome pictures and then tinted color groups with blue, green, and red. It also includes a whole group of transparent textures that will add only texture – not lighten, darken, or color your photo. Having this texture library on hand will completely changed your photo editing in both time and quality of results. These three types of texture give artists the ability to not only choose the texture but also choose how they want it to affect the current colors of their image.

This is the written tutorial for using textures with Perfect Layers 2.

Purchase the TextureAPhoto package at TextureAPhoto.com.

    Regarding the Pain of Others

Twenty-five years after her classic On Photography, Susan Sontag returns to the subject of visual representations of war and violence in our culture today.

How does the spectacle of the sufferings of others (via television or newsprint) affect us? Are viewers inured--or incited--to violence by the depiction of cruelty? In Regarding the Pain of Others, Susan Sontag takes a fresh look at the representation of atrocity--from Goya's The Disasters of War to photographs of the American Civil War, lynchings of blacks in the South, and the Nazi death camps, to contemporary horrific images of Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Israel and Palestine, and New York City on September 11, 2001.

In Regarding the Pain of Others Susan Sontag once again changes the way we think about the uses and meanings of images in our world, and offers an important reflection about how war itself is waged (and understood) in our time.

How to Shoot Video That Doesn't Suck: Advice to Make Any Amateur Look Like a Pro

How to Shoot Video That Doesn't Suck is a quick and easy guide that will make your video better instantly-- whether you read it cover to cover or just skim a few chapters.  It's about the language of video. How to think like a director, regardless of equipment (amateurs think about the camera, pros think about communication).  It's about the rules developed over a century of movie-making--which work just as well when shooting a two-year-old's birthday party. Written by Steve Stockman, the director of Two Weeks (2007), plus TV shows, music videos, and hundreds of commercials, How to Shoot Video That Doesn't Suck explains in 74 short, pithy, insightful chapters how to tell a story and entertain your audience. How to shoot video people will want to watch.

Here's how to think in shots--how to move-point-shoot-stop-repeat, instead of planting yourself in one spot and pressing "Record" for five minutes. Why never to shoot until you see the whites of your subject's eyes. Why to "zoom" with your feet and not the lens. How to create intrigue on camera. The book covers the basics of framing, lighting, sound (use an external mic), editing, special effects (turn them off!), and gives advice on shooting a variety of specific situations: sporting events, parties and family gatherings, graduations and performances. Plus, how to make instructional and promotional videos, how to make a music video, how to capture stunts, and much more. At the end of every chapter is a suggestion of how to immediately put what you learned into practice, so the next time you're shooting you'll have begun to master the skill. Accompanying the book is a website with video clips to illustrate different rules, techniques, and situations.

Memory Drawing: Perceptual Training and Recall

All drawing and painting from life is at some point done from memory, even if that memory is only seconds old. An artist's ability to recall something previously seen is all the more important when their subject is no longer in view. Da Vinci, Corot, Degas, Whistler, and Inness wrote about it. In fact, Inness claimed that many of his best landscape paintings were done from memory. Memory Drawing: Perceptual Training and Recall teaches you how to visually perceive and accurately recall those perceptions. It will also help you improve your abilities to remember fleeting effects, seize essentials, and even enhance your imagination.

A pictorial history of the world's most enigmatic city

From the first known photograph taken in Los Angeles to its most recent sweeping vistas, this photographic tribute to the City of Angels provides a fascinating journey through the city's cultural, political, industrial, and sociological history.
